Beginning today, I’ve implemented some new safety measures for dealing with client credit card information.

The first is during the ordering process. When you log in to your viewing/shopping gallery and submit an order, you will still have the option to select a credit card type for payment but you will no longer enter your credit card into the system. I’ve implemented this as another form of protection for my clients and their personal information. While I have taken all precautions and use reputable companies to process my orders and payments, the less you enter your credit card information and submit it over the Internet, the safer your information is.

This really does not slow down the ordering process as I always contact clients to confirm your order and any special instructions before processing payment. The only added step will now be if you are wanting to pay by credit card, I will contact you by phone and get that information over the phone.

The second measure I am taking is that I will no longer retain any credit card information in my accounting system. In the past I may have kept a copy of repeat client’s credit card information on-file so that a client could just tell me to charge the same card that was used in an earlier purchase or for their session fee. Now, any credit card number that has been stored in your client files up to this point have been purged and is no longer available in my accounting software. I will no longer store credit card information at all in my accounting systems.

While this might pose one more step in the ordering process in that you will now have to relay your card number repeatedly for subsequent orders, taking this measure will only safeguard your information even more. Following this measure, I’d also like to ask that you not send your credit card number to me via email. Again, while this might save one step in the process, it is not worth the risk of making your credit card information vulnerable to being swiped.

I would also like to note that I am PCI Compliant. What this means to you is that I have taken the steps to ensure that when I am processing your credit card payment, my systems are secure, ensuring that your payment information is protected.

If you drive by the studio this month  - you might notice that I’m no longer there.  Don’t worry, I haven’t closed my business…just my retail location. I am taking the rest of this month to pack up and move out!

The decision to close the studio doors was not made lightly. I have become very attached to my little studio space and it has served me well. Recently though, I’ve realized that my time and resources are much more needed on the home front. Closing the studio doors will afford me to be able to dedicate more time to my family…while my children are still young.  Don’t worry though, I’ll still be working.  My photography business has been very rewarding and I could not let that go.

Given this change, there will be some additional changes on how I offer my services. From this point on, if you would like a studio-like session you can still come to me for that….rather, I will COME TO YOU! I will bring the studio to YOU! I will still also be offering location sessions whether at your home or a location special to you.

For my baby planners and portrait club members, please don’t worry, we’ll still have your sessions, they will just take place on location, either outdoors when the weather permits, or at your home. I can bring a small studio setup to give the look of a studio-session.

Please spread the word that I have NOT closed shop.

I will once again be promoting my Portrait Parties.  Portrait Parties take place at a friend or family member’s home, where the children are comfortable. Events are a fun and convenient opportunity to capture beautiful professional images of your children while earning credit toward your own enlargement order!

I will also be creating more Limited Edition Sessions like the one I am holding this month - Portraits in the Park. Limited Edition Sessions will have special pricing and take place on specified days at specified locations. Some examples of other sessions might include Teddy Bears and Tutus, Tea Parties, a Day at the Ball Park, etc. Watch the blog for the special announcements.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to give me a call!

To celebrate the new changes Joy Hamilton Photography will be undertaking, I will be holding a sale that you can’t miss.

I read something like this on a fellow photographer’s blog a while ago…and thought it might be a good idea to detail out how my sessions go, a little bit how I photograph!

My portraits my not look like the formal family portraits we all grew up with over the years. I do pride myself on creating something different that captures my clients being themselves! My clients are usually looking for something a little different, stylish and more contemporary than what many “traditional” photographers offer. The following descriptions explain some of the things you may notice in my portfolio.

That being said, there are some things you may notice when looking at my work that is different from what you might be accustomed to…

“Tight Crops” – This means super close close-ups where often the face fills most of the frame of the image. These images are about the eyes, and often the top of the head is not included in the image. I meant to do that!

“No Cheesy Grins”- Our moms always told us to “smile for the camera”…and that it wasn’t a good photo unless we had a big smile. That really isn’t true. I love a pensive look as much as a big grin. I’ll even capture that big ole pout and even the occasional tear! I meant to do that!

“A Little Negative” – Negative space is when the subject is placed off to the side of an image and the rest of the image is empty—this is done for artistic impact. I meant to do that!

“Left of Center”- The most boring position for a subject in a photograph is smack dab in the middle! I know, again, that isn’t what we were taught.  There is something in design called the Rule of Thirds that we photographers often employ to enhance visual interest.

The rule states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines (like a tic-tac-toe board). The four points formed by the intersections of these lines can be used to align features in the photograph. Aligning a photograph with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the photo than simply centering the feature would.

Still not sure…trust me, your child does not need to be right in the center of an image for it to be a good portrait! I meant to do that!

“The Light in the Eyes” One of the most important characteristics of good portrait photography is good lighting. One of the markers for good lighting is something called a “catchlight,” – a reflection of light in the eyes. I love big catchlights! Flip through any parenting or glamour magazine and look at the eyes, you’ll see big bright catchlights! A lack of catchlights leaves the eyes looking flat, dull and lifeless. I meant to to put those big ole lights in the subject’s eyes!!

So as you look through my sneak peeks and portfolio…and you wonder “why did she do that” - just remember - “I meant to do that”!

Have a great weekend!
